When going on long cross-country drives with the whole family, aside from making sure that the vehicle has a tank full of gas, is serviced, checked and declared in good running condition, make sure that you take along some things for the children to do and enjoy.
Help Children Enjoy The Trip
Children have very short attention spans. They can only sleep so much during long drives before they begin playing with each other and end up fighting with one another. This is the way of life. You have been through this yourself when you were a kid.
Provide Kids With Games And Coloring Books
The best way to prepare for this then is to bring along games, coloring books, toys and anything else that can draw their interest so that you can concentrate on driving and negotiating the road towards your destination.
Tell Stories Or Sing Songs
You can make the kids sing, tell stories or make up stories about what they see on the road as you drive by. You can have them play with their game boys or work on coloring books as long as you keep them occupied long enough.
Always Keep Children Entertained And Occupied
Making sure that they are entertained and occupied ensures that you will have a safe trip. It is a very harrowing experience to drive over unfamiliar roads and have children fighting and crying in the rear of the vehicle. Driving alone is tough; driving with kids playing around, crying and elbowing each other at the back of a moving vehicle is more than a nightmare and can get on anyone's nerves. It becomes dangerous as well because the sudden movements at the back can block your view of traffic from the rear.
