Buying Food Products Safely
There are many safety features companies have added to their food and medical products to make sure that the products are not tampered with. Following some safety practices when buying or using food will keep your family healthy.
Most food manufacturers have an expiration date printed on their packages. Even though most grocery stores make sure they do not have expired food on their shelves, there are occasions when they miss an item or two. Make sure you check these dates before purchasing the food and recheck them before using the food.
Damaged packaging can be a warning sign that the food may be spoiled or tampered with. For food items that have torn boxes or crushed boxes, don’t buy them unless you know for certain that the items inside are safely sealed. For canned items, don’t buy any cans that are dented or bulging because the seal inside may be broken.
Other safety devices that manufacturers have put in place are pop tops for jars. The metal lids will have an area that pops up to show the pressure has been let out. Don’t buy or use an item whose lid is already popped up before opening. Plastic bottles or jars have plastic wraps on their lids to seal them. Sealed paper and metallic covers are another method manufacturers use to make sure their products remain fresh and safe.
Be sure to read any manufacturer safety precautions before using an item to ensure it is not tampered with. If you do find that a product has been tampered with, report it to the store where you purchased it or directly to the manufacturer.
Some stores offer torn packages or products nearing an expiration date at a discount. These are usually located towards the back of the stores. At times you can find some great deals, but it is very important to inspect products thoroughly before purchasing them.
